Kids aged 8 and more. We recommend they have experience in hiking, beside they can ride most of the time. Lodging only in twin rooms (with double bed & bunk bed).

Tour Description
On the day of your arrival at Aljezur, Vale das Amoreiras, you will easily familiarize with the donkeys. We will inform you about the basics in grooming and handling.
On our 1st day of trekking we will prepare the donkeys together and then start the route connecting Aljezur & the Via Algarviana.
After about a kilometer in the valley we will start to donkey-trek uphill, not steep but continously for about ½ hour. From the crest you can then enjoy the first impressive view of the Monchique mountains. After we follow the Cerca valley upstream, passing Moinho do Bispo, then follow the Cerca River entering a beautifull valley nearly abandoned by men. We are now encircled by a magnificent mountainous region (highest top, Fóia 902m). We will cross the Cerca river twice (This means take off socks and shoes in spring and winter).
Further up, left side, we are surprised by a huge rock face with waterfall, quite close to the point where we have to leave the valley trekking uphill, constantly about 45 minutes, very rarely steep. On top we step the first kilometers on the Via Algarviana (tarred road) leading us to the charming mountain village Marmelete.
After grooming the donkeys we have a little snack at a local café before we visit Senhor José, an artisan of cutlery in heather root wood.
The route on the 2nd Day of donkey trekking, from Marmelete to Monchique, the 11th Via Algarviana stage, starts right away uphill, first through a cork oak wood rich in diverse flora and fauna. We will pass close to Picos, a steep hill before we cross a road (EN 1087) entering a eucalyptus plantation and passing Pardieiro, a wind generator park at Madrinha and later some small settlements like Porta da Horta, Barbelote and Vale da Moita. The track then leads along a beautiful valley with old terraces once used for potatoe plantations. We will get to a small dam and after to a remarkable ravine, Penedo do Buraco, at the north side of Fóia, the Algarves highest point (902m). The vegetation is dominated by dense cistus bushes, gorse, junipers and rhododendron ponticum, indigenous to the Serra de Monchique. Around the top sparse tree coverage, dense bushes and numerous rocky outcrops.
Downhill the path goes through more eucalyptus. Once we get to the 17th century convent „Convento do Desterro“, one of the main historical buildings of Monchique we nearly arrived the end of our tour: Monchique downtown.
After grooming the donkeys we finish our donkey trekking weekend with a little good-bye-snack at a local café.

- Adults and kids will guide the donkeys.
- Kids can also ride the donkeys, beside steeper up- and downhill bits.
